Deborah Reece
My practice is dedicated to working with families experiencing trauma and transition. My background in government work and in private practice enhanced my sensitivity to the unique concerns and dynamics associated with families in distress. My practice model favors an amicable approach but, as a confident and accomplished litigator of over 25-years, I am unafraid of going to trial on cases requiring judicial intervention. I develop trusting relationships with my clients through honesty, hard work, and a wicked sense of humor.
I grew up in the Bay Area of California. I attended San Jose State University earning a B.A. in Political Science and then attended Santa Clara School of Law, earning my J.D. in 2000. My first job out of law school was as a Deputy District Attorney focusing on domestic violence, child abuse, and child abduction. I transitioned into family law in 2016, specializing in child custody, domestic violence, and Minor’s Counsel work. I was known for my expertise in child custody matters and was sought by judges and counsel for the most difficult Minor’s Counsel cases because of my expertise in handling high conflict cases. I trained judges, attorneys, and law enforcement on issues relating to child abduction, interstate and international child custody, and domestic violence. I enhanced my professional abilities by earning a LL.M. in Child Law through Loyola University (Chicago) in 2021. I was admitted to practice in Illinois in 2022.
I transitioned from California to Illinois in 2023 and joined the Cook County State Attorney’s Office in the Child Protection Unit. Shortly thereafter, I was recruited to fill the newly created Juvenile Justice Sexual Assault Specialist position: handling the most difficult and sensitive cases in the juvenile system. I was humbled to work with families torn apart by acts of betrayal. This experience enhanced my dedication to serving the whole person: not just the legal issue, but also ensuring that resources are available to address how the legal issue has affected that person’s life.
I came into my career with a deep sense of empathy for people seeking legal help to navigate the most difficult time of their lives. I serve my clients with both humility and strength. My goal is to help you through your case and into the next phase of your life with confidence.
